Decatur passes moratoriums on tree removal

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

It was a McMansion moratorium compromise Monday night as the Decatur City Commission voted against a 90-day ban on the demolition of existing homes to build new one.  At the same time, they approved a plan that prohibits the removal of trees with trunks over 12 inches for the next three months.

The hot-button issue came before the city with many residents on both sides voicing their concerns before a packed meeting.  With the rebounding housing market, there's no shortage of construction underway in Decatur, but some were concerned that the new McMansions would hurt the unique feel of the city.
