The Hunt Event

Posted: Updated:
Far Hills, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The Hunt, an annual horse steeplechase race in Far Hills, New Jersey occurred over the weekend. About 35,000 people gathered to watch this race and take place in the festivities.

This year, security was increased due to rowdy behavior in past years. There have been incidents of throwing full bottles of beer and young kids getting out of hand. Alcohol wasn’t allowed to be carried in this year.

If you rented a plot, you could drive your car in and have whatever you wanted in your car. Anything you brought in your car was not allowed off your plot. If you walked in, you were searched before being allowed entrance.

Another issue this year was the possibility of legalizing gambling at The Hunt. It was attached to a bill that would legalize gambling down the shore, but Christie took it off.

Many people who go to The Hunt say they bet amongst their friends for fun. Mr. Kelleher has been going to the Hunt for about forty years. “It’s part of tradition.” He said. People said if they were allowed to gamble, they would partake in it.

The Hunt is a fundraiser for the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, where all proceeds go to help the medical center. This event brings in people from all over New Jersey since it’s the most well-known steeplechase horse race in New Jersey.

And fellow New Jersey Chaser, Hank Flynn, got the chance to live the dream and ride along with New Egypt Speedway Track Champion Billy Pauch. The veteran driver gave some very helpful advice and says all his students should follow the saying "go around slow and learn from the pro".
