Motorcyclist in road rage case tells his side of the story

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Imagine seeing this when driving down the road. A man on a motorcycle waving a knife at you in an apparent case of road rage.

That's what apparently happened to a man and his 6-year-old daughter in Scottsdale.

Police say this motorcyclist with a red Mohawk on his helmet wreaked havoc on the roads near Happy Valley and Scottsdale.

In a jailhouse interview Tuesday, the man told FOX 10 he has a baby on the way. He feels bad for scaring a 6-year-old girl, but says the driver of the SUV was after him.

"I don't want to lose my family and I feel like I'm going to lose my family because of this because I'm being stupid," says John McLaughlin.

The 23-year-old is in jail charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he admittedly pulled a knife on a driver of an SUV in Scottsdale earlier this month.

"He swerved into me 3 or 4 times that day, after the 3rd time I whipped out my knife, held it up and pointed to his tire."

The driver of the SUV snapped this photo of McLaughlin holding the knife. He admits it's him in the picture.

"I pulled it out to say, leave me alone or you're going to lose your tire, you're trying to run into me."

According to the police report, the driver of the SUV says the motorcyclist started tailgating him, then was driving erratically before pulling the knife on him. He doesn't mention anything about cutting him off.

"What led up to me pulling out a knife? No biker pulls out a knife and says 'oh screw you.' Just like the thing that happened in New York with the Land Rover -- something led up to that," says McLaughlin.

Who can forget the video of a driver of the Land Rover, beaten after a clash with bikers in New York last month. This was not McLaughlin's only run-in with the law.

"I'm on probation for an endangerment charge because I shined a laser pointer at the police helicopter."

FOX 10: "In August you were arrested for going 100 mph down Scottsdale Road, tell me about that."

McLaughlin: "Just being stupid having fun."

FOX 10: "So in hindsight your thoughts on these decisions?"

McLaughlin: "I was the dumbest idiot out there."

He now has this to say to the driver of the SUV.

"I'm sorry for what I did I truly am I felt threatened and scared because he was swerving into me. I'm not being stupid all the time I'm being a kid I'm 23 years old I ride a motorcycle."

Scottsdale police say McLaughlin may be a suspect in a theft case but McLaughlin says he knows nothing about that. He's being held in jail on no bond.

We were told by police that the driver of the SUV was not available for an interview.
