Family jumps from window to escape fire

Posted: Updated:

Flames engulfed a southeast Atlanta apartment overnight, forcing the family inside to jump from their second-story window to escape.

The blaze sparked just after midnight at the complex, located on New Town Circle at McDonough Boulevard.

Kamisha Boozer told All News 106.7's Carolyn Ryan there were flames in the hallway when she tried to get out, so they closed the door.  The only other way out was through the window, so they jumped.

Neighbors gathered below the window to help get them out.  Boozer says the scariest part was passing her 4-year-old daughter, Leah, down to someone else. She had no other choice, but Leah said she wasn't scared at all.

A man who was also inside the apartment jumped from the second-story window and was treated for his injuries at the scene.  He is expected to be okay.

Firefighters say the blaze appears to be related to an electrical problem.  The Red Cross has stepped in to offer assistance to the family.
