Zoo Atlanta names twin giant panda cubs

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

You might call them the panda cubs formerly known as Cub A and Cub B, but Zoo Atlanta has two other names in mind.  They revealed the new names for their twin giant pandas on Wednesday morning!

Zoo officials announced the pandas will be called Mei Lun and Mei Huan, which originates from a Chinese idiom meaning "something indescribably beautiful and magnificent."

A contest was held to help the zoo narrow the names down to a few, and the final names were chosen by staff members at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China.

The twins were born earlier this year to Lun Lun and her partner, Yang Yang.
