Mailman Saves House From Fire

Posted: Updated:

A Michigan mail carrier goes beyond the call of duty after a house on his route caught fire. Without hesitation, he jumped into action, running inside the building. And when the fire was out, what he did next may surprise you.

It's a word we use often and one that Darrian Crutcher won't take on for himself.

"Nah I wouldn't say a hero," he remarked.

However, this unassuming mailman definitely fits the bill.

"It was a blessing for me to be at that spot at that particular time," he reflected.

His quick thinking may have saved Carolyn Patterson's house and quite possibly her life.

"It really was burning like I don't know what," she remembered.

Carolyn lit incense that started the fire in her house.

"The dispatcher told me to see if anybody was in the house," said Crutcher.

Darrian saw the smoke and went into action.

"Got the water hose on the side of the house, went and hooked it up to the water hose, and went up into the room and squirted the fire in the corner," he described.

"He was spraying it down and everything and knocked it down quite a bit," described firefighter David Weems. "He did great! I asked him after it was over, ‘I said you should come join us we're hiring right now.'"

Darrian stayed on the job until firefighters from Engine 30 arrived. And when they did, Darrian didn't hesitate to give another thought to work.

"Went on about my business," he said. He didn't give it any thought, didn't take a break or stop to get a drink of water.

"I said, ‘ok …the real firemen are here now so I can go ahead and do my job," he said.

"I think this room probably would've burned up. I really do. He was brave while all the smoke it was dark," remarked Patterson.

"It's great just to see citizens stopping to do the good. The good of man and we're happy about that," fireman David Weems said.

"I just seen a lady in the house and kid outside, I didn't even think, I just done it," Crutcher said. "I know if I had been...if somebody would've seen me like that I wish they would've done me like that too."

It's the Golden Rule. We all know it. Darrian is proof of what can happen when we live by it.
