Mother desperate for answers in son's death

Posted: Updated:

A heartbroken mother is desperate for an arrest in her son's murder.

Denarold Florence, 29, was killed Saturday night in his Jonesboro home. His cousin, Dominique Favors, is still recovering from a gunshot wound to the face.

Clayton County police say the gunmen got away in an unidentified car and they have few clues to go on.

Benjamin Barnes also lives in the home on Queens Drive. He said that the gunmen arrived just before 10 p.m. on Saturday and banged on the front door, demanding to see Favors. Barnes said his roommate told him he did not recognize the gunmen.

"He said, ‘I went to close the door,' and one of the guys cursed and said, ‘Yeah,' and then they shot as he was closing the door," Barnes said. "The door was locked. They didn't even know who they were shooting, and apparently Denarold was holding down the door Dominique had to break down the actual door in order for him to get into the room.

Barnes suspects the gunmen assumed the roommates were drug dealers with lots of cash based on Florence's car and the volume of large boxes that Florence regularly brought in and out of their home. Barnes denied that his roommates sold drugs.
Florence's mother, Brenda Hunter, said that Denarold had a 5-year-old son.

"He just wants his daddy right now. He's so afraid," Hunter said.

Hunter hopes someone will step forward with information that will lead to an arrest in the shootings.
