Three in custody after Detroit officer hit by car at Eastern Market

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

All three suspects are in custody and the injured Detroit Police officer was released from the hospital Tuesday night after he was hit by a vehicle during a traffic stop. At least two officers discharged their weapons during the incident, police say.

Tuesday night Detroit Police's auto theft squad called for backup after pulling over a black Jeep Liberty near Eastern Market. The vehicle was believed to be linked to a carjacking. During the stop the Jeep backed up and ran over an officer injuring his hip and leg.

Two males and one female were inside the vehicle. All are juveniles. One of the suspects got out of the car and was arrested but the Jeep took off with the other two suspects still inside. An officer fired one shot as the vehicle drove away.

Police say a nearby squad car began to chase the vehicle and caught up with it after it crashed into a pole near Indian Village in the 2,300 mile of Van Dyke Ave. Police fired shots there as well but no one was hurt. The other two suspects were then taken into custody.

"There was one shot fired at the initial scene in Eastern Market. The shot did not take effect. Later on when the vehicle was involved in the accident ... several other shots were fired at that scene. Nothing took effect. We did do a canvas of the area and no damage to property," Gargalino says.

The officer who was hit by the car was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital and was treated for minor leg injuries. He was released later that same night.

Gargalino explains the charges the three suspects are facing: "Carjacking definitely is probably going to be one. The assault on the officer, how far they go with that, that's to be determined. But there's going to be multiple charges. If they have any sort of previous history that's going to come into play."

He continues: "Every run is a new run. Every day is a new day. You go out here, you do your job and you keep your head up because, at the end of the day, going home is the most important thing."

Coincidentally the same officers involved in Tuesday's incident just received an honor from the chief of police for how they handled an armed robbery last week.
