As the weather turns colder, it is a good time to remember all those tips to keep your home warm and safe. The experts at the Home Depot share some of those tips this morning in the Fox 2 Studios.
Danger zones in your home
Pinpoint specific areas where fire most likely to occur and eliminate dangers in those zones: cooktops, patios and decks with grills, rooms with many electrical cords and laundry rooms are a few common danger zones.
-Store combustibles away from these areas: cooking oil, liquid disinfectant sprays, drain openers and aerosol cans
-Don't grill inside partially covered garage/patio, keep grill at least 10 feet away from sides of your deck and house and have fire extinguisher on hand
-Inspect cords and plugs in rooms with electrical cords and look for cracks or damaged insulation
-Check for loose or missing plug blades which indicate overheating or burning on the plug and hot or discolored wall plates
-Make sure each plug is securely attached to a cable
-Clean filter screen in your dryer after every load of clothes
-Also important to clean the vent ducting that runs to the outside of your home. Small particles get through and build up over time in the vent. When flexible ducting is used all areas need to be cleaned
-Use a universal appliance brush to clean lint out of your dryer every three months, when you change your furnace or air conditioning filter
