Doctors expect a 15-year-old to recover after being shot at his grandmother's home in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto.
Corey Dooley's stepfather is charged with attempted murder.
The teenager suffered wounds to his leg and pelvis, and one bullet hit an artery, causing a tremendous loss of blood.
"It took more than the usual amount of effort. It was a main artery in the leg and it bled really quickly," said Dr. Michael Truitt, the Methodist Dallas trauma director.
"Miracles do happen on an everyday basis. I'm a living example of it," Dooley said.
His mother was grazed by a bullet.
Classmates at South Grand Prairie High School honored Dooley with photos during the homecoming parade.
