Barricaded gunman surrenders in Arlington after killing man

Posted: Updated:

A homicide suspect who barricaded himself inside an Arlington apartment complex on Monday surrendered after a seven hour standoff.

Arlington police said the suspect, Joel Jonas White, 32, shot and killed a man in his early 30s about 6 a.m. on Monday in the 1100 block of Silverwood Drive, north of Interstate 30 and west of Highway 360.

Arlington PD spokesman Lt. Christopher Cook said when responding officers tried to reach the victim they were met with gunfire. The suspect had access to multiple guns, Lt. Cook said.

Officers from both Arlington and Grand Prairie surrounded the complex.

Video from SKY 4 showed a SWAT team in position outside a second floor balcony. There was a car with blood stains and a shattered window parked outside the unit.

The officers took the suspect into custody around 1:30 p.m.

Police said the motive for the shooting is still unclear.

About 25 nearby residents were evacuated and others were placed on lockdown. School bus service to the complex was suspended for the morning.

Omar Richards said he heard multiple consistent gunshots, a pause and then more gunfire.

"You always hear people say whether it's a good community or bad community say nothing like that happens around here. Truth is it can happen anywhere," he said.

White was charged with murder and has a bond of $250,000.
