NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Runners and spectators should expect heightened security measures at the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3, 2013, in the wake of the bombings at the Boston Marathon this year.

New York Road Runners, which puts on the race, has spent $1 million on security this year, double the usual amount. That cost included hiring security consultants to evaluate the security plans.

Runners will not be allowed to wear bulky costumes, backpacks, or hydration packs.

"We have communicated over the past few months to them some prohibited item that they cannot bring," NYRR Executive Director Peter Ciaccia. "The biggest is the CamelBak hydration packs, over-the-shoulder backpack gear will not be allowed. Some of our runners like to run in costume. The spandex will be OK but nothing too bulky and nothing that covers the face."

Spectators should expect lots of security checkpoints that may include bag searches.
