Suspicious package at SMU's Bush Center not a threat

Posted: Updated:

A suspicious package found on the Southern Methodist University campus Tuesday morning was deemed non-hazardous by officials.

Campus police reportedly found the threat at the George W. Bush Presidential Center before 9 a.m. Monday and called Dallas Fire Rescue for help.

Video from SKY 4 showed a member of the bomb squad going out in protective gear to take an x-ray of something on the grass.

Officials would not discuss what it was, but said it was determined to be not dangerous or hazardous.

The Bush Center did not open for the morning until after 10:30, when the scene was cleared.

About 80 employees took shelter inside the building and some nearby construction workers were evacuated.

Nearby streets, the Crum Basketball Center and Moody Coliseum were also closed as a precaution, but the university said classes and business operations continued as normal.
