Plano PD make harassment arrest in Shea bullying case

Posted: Updated:

Plano police have arrested a juvenile for harassment in the I'm With Shea bullying case.

Plano police said they made the arrest Tuesday at 2 p.m. for harassing Plano ISD student Shea Shawhan. The suspect has been charged with harassment, a Class B misdemeanor. The person arrested was not named because of their age. However, Shea's mother tells FOX4 they knew the girl well.

Police said for now it doesn't appear anyone else will be arrested in the case.

Shea Shawhan, 18, is a student with special needs at Plano West Senior High School and was born with a brain injury that left her with the mental capacity of an 8-year-old.

Shea has recently been tormented by threatening text messages. Shea understood the mean and hurtful messages and they sparked a weeks-long police investigation.

The texts came from fake numbers generated by web apps, which made it a challenge for police to trace the senders.

Shea's mother, Keri Riddell, posted on Facebook after the arrest that she was relieved the person texting had been found.

"Thank you Plano Police Detective. I wish I could say I am overjoyed here, but there are no winners in this situation," Riddell wrote. "Shea no longer has to worry that she will get another text from this person.....and to all the kids out there sending what they think to be "anonymous" messages... YOU WILL BE FOUND!!!!"

She's relieved an arrest has been made but it's not the kind of closure they had hoped for. "It's a whole different pill to swallow when you know who the person is," said Riddell.

Shea's mother changed Shea's number and blocked many of the fake numbers but messages still got through. Sometimes Shea would receive several nasty text messages a day for two weeks.

"I just can't wrap my brain around it, that it's just one person that continually wanted to hurt her and me and my whole family. So I wish I knew that answer. I wish I knew why. What did we do to you? I hope that they do a good job of asking her that," said Riddell.

Some of the texts were:

"Why are you still here? Clearly no one wants you. You only have special needs friends and you're ugly and have terrible fashion sense. Honestly your clothes suck."

"People at West don't want her, that's the reason she has seizures because that's karma."

A Facebook page created to support Shea filled with support after FOX4 broke the story earlier in October. It currently has more than 80,000 likes.

FOX4 wanted to talk to Shea but Riddell said she's not sure how she's going to explain it all to her. She says Shea knows police caught someone but she's worried Shea won't understand how it could be someone she thought was a friend.
