DECATUR, Ga. -

Police say a 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his elderly grandmother following a late night argument on Tuesday.

Decatur police arrested 23-year-old Marquis La'Vonta Freeman for murder, aggravated assault and battery.

Police say they were called out to the home of Freeman's grandmother in the 200 block of Cambridge Avenue just before midnight after getting reports that a family argument had turned violent.

Officials found 75-year-old Shirley Kendrick with apparent stab wounds and a head injury after the assault. She was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died.

Neighbors said they rushed to the home after hearing commotion.

"I had his ankles pinned to the ground and as a result, the guy is staring me in the face saying 'kill me now, show me the light,'" said John Post.

Two family members who attempted to intervene in the assault were also sent to the hospital. Her husband received minor injuries and her son suffered serious injuries. Both are expected to recover from their injuries.

Police are trying to determine the cause of the deadly argument.

Neighbors tell FOX 5 News that the family has lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They say they are shocked by the murder.
