NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Now that Newark Mayor Cory Booker is heading to Washington, everyone wonders: Who will take control of Newark? The answer appears to be a man just upstairs from the mayor's office.

City Council President Luis Quintana is poised to take over when Booker is sworn into the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

The council has 30 days to vote for an interim mayor. The winner needs five votes, and five councilors have expressed their support for Quintana.

The 53-year-old Quintana has been on the Municipal Council since 1994. He was deputy mayor under Sharpe James.

Quintana would be Newark's first Latino mayor. His office did not return a request to comment.

A mayoral election will take place in May. Quintana does not plan to run, according to city councilors.
