Veterans say U.S. flag displayed improperly on city sign

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Veterans are demanding that city officials correct an American flag they say is being displayed improperly in downtown Atlanta.

The U.S. flag is among many countries' flags featured on a sign overlooking Andrew Young International Boulevard.  Some experts said that the flag, which is displayed vertically with the union in the upper right corner, is being incorrectly showcased.

"Our flag, when displayed, is to be the union to the top left," said John Bushwack of American Legion Post 233.

Fellow American Legion member Chuck Bagley contacted officials at Atlanta City Hall after finding out about the flag flap.

"We're talking about 15 months of frustration and dealing with the city of Atlanta," Bagley said. "I tried to bring it to the attention of every City Council member, Mayor [Kasim] Reed."

Bushwack said the flag display was "an insult."

"It's absolute disgrace," Bushwack said. "I wish our political figures had the courage and the fortitude to display our symbol properly."

The mayor's office told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that it has been consulting with Central Atlanta Progress, a downtown business organization. They say their research that in this instance, the flag is being displayed properly.
