Equipment stolen from Deer Valley Pop Warner Association

Posted: Updated:

The Deer Valley Pop Warner Football Association stores all their equipment at Thunderbird High School -- that's where they play their weekend games. But this weekend, the league tells us thieves broke into the school and hauled their equipment away.

Now the league is scrambling to get the equipment it needs to make it through the season.

For Pop Warner teams, this is what it's all about -- gearing up for state and national championships. For parents, it can be a costly investment.

"For my oldest son it's about $600-700, times by 3, so it's a lot of money," says Angela Brundon, mother of 3 sons.

But the Deer Valley Pop Warner Football Association may be forced to hike up prices after someone made off with a trailer full of football and fundraising gear.

"We had a 6 by 12 black enclosed trailer that houses all of our football equipment stolen from Thunderbird High School," says Jennifer Henson, Deer Valley Pop Warner president.

In the trailer was everything ranging from footballs to snow cone and popcorn machines. The league is now out about $10,000 in equipment.

"When these kids are out here playing, this is a diverse selection of kids. some can play, some can afford it, we do a lot of fundraising… a lot of time and energy goes into it, it's devastating," says Steve Short, pee wee coach.

Many parents rely on fundraising dollars to get their kids to out of state playoffs.

"Fundraising is very important. They might be going Florida. that's a lot of money to fork out for kids to be successful and to move forward for their season," says Brundon.

This season, the league is borrowing much of its equipment from other Pop Warner associations -- but next year, as the league tries to close the gap, higher fees could block some kids from playing.

"We already ask the parents to pay to play, but they come shop at our snack bar, so all that money that they put in weekly is kind of all for naught."

The league is not a for-profit organization.
