LAX-DFW flight takes off minutes before deadly shooting

Posted: Updated:

Passengers on a flight from Los Angeles to Dallas took off minutes before a gunman opened fire in an airport terminal.

The Virgin America flight had been in the air only a few minutes when passengers on board noticed news reports about the shooting on their in-flight satellite TVs.

"They were showing on the news how he went in through that terminal and by our gate so seeing all the kids and the people that were there... I just worry that they're okay," said Carie Alowen.

Two of the passengers on board said their friends were supposed to be on the LAX to DFW flight, but missed the plane. When they landed in Dallas, they got texts from their friends. One read, "gun shots at the airport, locked in the toilet. love yas."

Passengers said they were shaken by the shooting and concerned about the TSA worker killed. Some wondered if it was the same person they saw while going through security.

"I can see the faces of the TSA workers that we went through," said Michael Boucher.

Afternoon and evening flights from Dallas to Los Angeles were either canceled or delayed for numerous hours due to the shooting.
