5th grade Dallas basketball player gaining national attention

Posted: Updated:

Jaden Jones, 10, is getting national attention for skills on the basketball court. The 5th grader attending Lee McShan Junior Elementary in Dallas has sharp ball handling skills but there is one other feature that makes him stand out on the floor.

People at the college level are already taking note of his skills.

He's 5'5 making him taller then Shaquille O'Neal was at that age.

"I love basketball, I started out when I was a little kid and I always loved it since then," said Jaden Jones.

His parents say the attention from just about every level of the sport, has been a whirlwind.

Recently, Yahoo! Sports reported that a letter to Jaden from an assistant coach at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA was recruiting.

Jaden's dad said the coach is an old friend and says it's not a recruiting letter. It's more of an encouragement letter telling Jaden to keep his grades up and that he's keeping an eye on his progress.

"He didn't give him an offer like a firm offer to come to the school. It was just a letter for him to, you know, keep his grades good in school which has worked. Since he got the letter, he's gotten good grades and it's just been a good thing. It's a fun thing," said Jerel Jones, Jaden's dad.

With his skills and vertical advantage, the 5th grader is on track to be a stand out all the way to college or even professionally.

"He works hard. He's determined. He's always asking the right questions, doing the right things. He's got a great personality," said Danny Hulshult, Jaden's Teacher.

Jaden's mom keeps him humble. She reminds him to clean up after himself and reminds him he's a regular kid.

"Whether he plays in game 7 for the LA Lakers or he's in game 1 for the Junior College of Texas, his parents are going to be in the stands cheering for him," said Jerel Jones.

The number 45 on his jersey carries significance.

"I wear number 45 because Michael Jordan wore it. He didn't finish it when his career was over so I'm going to finish it for him," said Jaden.
