CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Seven apartment buildings in the Humboldt Park and Logan Square neighborhoods will compete with one another to reduce their energy usage as part of a new city-sponsored program, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Friday.

The Chicago Neighborhood Energy Challenge is a partnership between the city and the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation that will allow residents and property managers to win prizes for reducing their carbon footprint and lowering their energy bills, according to a release issued by the mayor's office.

Divvy bike passes, local museum admission and more than $40,000 in other prizes will be used to encourage residents participate in the six-month competition, with an overall goal to achieve 5 to 10 percent savings in electricity, gas and water, according to the release. The program will also include monthly educational workshops on energy efficiency for residents of the participating properties, the mayor's office said.

The building that saves the most energy will be awarded a $25,000 grand prize, while second and third prizes will be $7,500 and $3,500, respectively. According to the mayor's office, property managers and residents will determine how the prize money is reinvested into the properties.

The contest is intended to serve as a pilot program for future projects, including similar competitions in other neighborhoods or across the nation, according to the release. The University of Chicago will conduct data analysis throughout the competition and evaluate the pilot program once it is complete.
