Mesa temple begins covering grounds with annual Christmas lights

MESA, Ariz. -

It's a been a tradition in Mesa since 1980. The Mesa temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will be covered in thousands of lights.

Volunteers have been hastily putting up the twinkling lights for its big debut the day after Thanksgiving.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

We may have just celebrated Halloween, but it is already starting to look a lot light Christmas at the Mesa temple.

Tens of thousands of lights are being meticulously placing them around the temple grounds.

"We can't even count, but I always guess a lot, like a whole bunch and I don't know," said Beckie Jackson, director of lights at Mesa temple grounds.

Over the summer, the lights are stored in a warehouse.

Now they're coming out of storage, being checked and are being prepared to make their triumphant return.

The strings and strands of lights are all being put up by volunteers.

For some, this is a family tradition, for others, it's their first time.

"What we love most is that it's so family centered," said Jackson.

Once the lights are lit, hundreds of visitors will get to enjoy a beautiful holiday sight.

"The lights help me remember the true meaning of Christmas," said Jackson.

Volunteers will be at the temple every Saturday until Thanksgiving, when the lights will be turned on for the public to enjoy.
