DETROIT (WJBK) -- Detroit police say a bus driver is hospitalized after a man threw liquid in his face. Reports conflicted at first but police say now the liquid is most likely bleach.

Officer Adam Madera says the driver was attacked after pulling up Sunday at a stop near the former state fairgrounds along Woodward Avenue, the city's main north-south thoroughfare. The man who tossed the liquid fled on foot.

The attack comes amid ongoing concerns about bus driver safety in Detroit. Last month, a drivers' protest over safety issues halted Detroit Department of Transportation operations for a day. Police have said they would step up efforts to keep buses safer.

"We're fed up," said Vice President of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 26 William Williams. "We're not safe anymore. We don't feel safe at our job and we have to do something about it."

Williams says that bus driver cannot see since the attack; we are not sure at this time if the blindness is temporary or permanent.
