Woman recovering after being burned at gas station pump

Posted: Updated:
CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -

The woman who was set ablaze at a Clarkesville gas station talked to FOX 5 on Monday.

Authorities have charged 37-year-old Austin Dawkins with reckless conduct after his wife, Jessica, caught fire at the Gulf Food Mart on Grant Street. Police said Dawkins held up a cigarette lighter too close to the gas pump as he was filling up his truck.

Surveillance video shows a spewing stream of fire splashing on to and eventually engulfing Dawkins' 30-year-old wife.

Jessica Dawkins is now home from the hospital recovering from burns to her legs, arms, back and head.  She was reluctant to speak at length about the incident, but said she is healing.

"It's just that our family's been through a lot," Jessica Dawkins told FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt.

FOX 5 has learned that the couple's son and his grandmother were both in the vehicle just feet away from the flames.

State fire investigators haven't said whether they believe the incident was a bizarre accident or something more.

"At this time, I can't really speculate with that being a civil case right now," said State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss.

Austin Dawkins was granted bond late Monday.

Habersham County's solicitor will make the state's case against Austin Dawkins. He faces up to a year in jail on the misdemeanor reckless conduct charge.
