Under The Affordable Care Act all insurance policies must offer 10 essential benefits, maternity care being one of those benefits, and those benefits are required regardless of your age or gender. That means maternity care is mandatory for men and children.

One local father puts it into perspective.

"We got a letter from our insurance company stating that her rate is going to be going up, and her policy is going to change. Due to the new law in place, all have to be covered with maternity coverage," Donny Dedvukaj tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley. "We're doing the right thing by paying for insurance and doing what we're supposed to be doing. Punishing us by making us pay more of a rate, I don't understand it."

State Senator Morris Hood held a town hall meeting Monday night to help people across the state understand the Affordable Care Act. One of the panelists at that meeting explains why everyone must pay into maternity coverage.

"Everybody pays into the pool when they're healthy and then when they need a certain kind of medical care, they're in a position to be able to take advantage of having health insurance," says John Freeman. He is with Michigan's branch of Know Your Care. "The way insurance works is that, you know, not everybody takes advantage of every single aspect of what a policy will cover. They take advantage of different aspects at different points in their lives."

But what about the increase in premiums?

Freeman says if families buy insurance through the healthcare marketplace the rate could go down.
