Dallas County commissioners battle on voter ID law

Posted: Updated:

Tempers flared at Tuesday's Dallas County Commissioners Court after a news conference for the Secretary of State on early voting was canceled by County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Jenkins said he, along with the district attorney, decided to cancel the news conference because it would be held at a county building. Dallas County is currently part of a lawsuit against the state over new voter ID rules.

State officials wanted to have a news conference touting how well early voting was proceeding.

"I'm complaining because you went beyond the policy of this commissioners court and took it into your own hands to overrule something that had already been done," said Commissioner Mike Cantrell.

Cantrell said Jenkins used his office to block the secretary of state and push his own agenda.
