Police search for Sky Harbor luggage theft suspects

Posted: Updated:

Have you ever lost your luggage at the airport?

It's happening to more and more passengers--and it may be no accident!

Phoenix Police say it's giving crooks at Sky Harbor a fast track on crime.  Authorities are noticing a spike in the number of bags stolen from the airport and thieves turned the Sky Train into a getaway car.

On Wednesday, police released surveillance photos of four suspects.  Take a close look - police say those suspects are behind a recent rash of thefts at the airport's baggage claim areas -- allegedly grabbing bags right off the carousel and walking away.

"Yeah, very easily.. we think that at least one of these individuals has come back multiple times to do the same thing, to take luggage," said Sgt. Steve Martos.

"Always.. I always check a bag," said Pam Darmody, who is visiting from St. Louis.

Frequent flyers Pam and Pat Darmody try to get to baggage claim as soon as possible after their flight lands to keep and eye on their checked bags.

"Oh definitely, we usually get down here right away and look for it," said Pam.

Pat adds, "It's kind of a rarity in the U.S. to have any kind of a secondary check for the checked bag, where someone would actually look for a claim ticket.  So anyone can really walk off with your bag."

Phoenix Police remind travelers not to pack valuables in your checked luggage just in case and they are hoping someone will recognize the men in the pictures and turn them in.

"We think that somebody obviously.. if they know these individuals.. will be able to help us," said Martos.

If you have information on these suspects, contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness 480-WITNESS.
