Cycle studio powers gym

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When you think of a spin class you typically picture hard bodies and a massive calorie burn. But here at the fitness guru in DUMBO, Brooklyn, students spin with a different purpose.

"We see it on the screen how hard we're working, if we're not working hard enough we've got to pedal faster, pedal harder and it's generating more power," said one cyclist.

This isn't your average spin class. The bikes in this room actually help to power the electricity in the gym.

"It's far less of a combative how many calories am I burning environment so much as a how many watts am I creating?" said Michael Feigin, The Fitness Guru. "It's simply a generator that attaches to the flywheel at the front of a normal spin bike and through wiring we attach it to the big adapter that literally plugs into our wall and feeds into our power grid."

Students get to track the wattage they're creating on their bikes and on a screen in the class, which they say motivates them to push even harder.

"You can't be lazy about it, you can't say today I'm not feeling so great because it's right there in front of you staring you in the face as you're riding," said one student.

Another said: "We're giving back to the community, to the building, we're creating power, so instead of focusing on 'oh I burned 500 calories,' it's like 'no I'm creating the energy for this building.'"

Feigin said the students get 10 percent off their membership if they generate 1,000 watts in a month. Not a member? A class goes for about $28 a pop.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
