Pot growing operation shut down; 87 plants found in W. Phoenix home

PHOENIX -

Police arrested a man for growing pot inside his home.  He had a license from the state allowing him to grow medical marijuana, but authorities say he lied about his address to get that license and he wasn't giving that pot to patients.

Police say the man responsible behind the marijuana -- was not only growing it, but also selling it.  He was even shipping the pot through the mail to dealers across the country.  Now -- he's behind bars -- facing some big charges.

A quiet afternoon was interrupted by the sound of SWAT teams surrounding a home in a west Phoenix neighborhood.

Inside the home, police discovered 87 marijuana plants.

Phoenix Police say Matthew Group was behind the grow -- and had a medical marijuana license, but he wasn't supposed to be growing it in Phoenix.

Police say he applied for the license, but provided a Lake Havasu City address, which would have allowed him to legally grow a small number of plants because that Havasu address is more than 25 miles away from a medical marijuana dispensary.  But this west Phoenix house is too close to one, according to state law.

"The things that he was involved in was not only obtaining this card illegally, but growing 87 plants way above and beyond what would be allowed for him to grow legally, even if he was allowed to do that," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Neighbors are just glad this grow is now shut down and out of their neighborhood.

Group faces a number of charges, including possessing marijuana and forgery.

Some of the neighbors we talked to say they smelled pot occasionally, but never knew what house it was coming from until now.
