DORA DOLPHIN: Dancing Minn. dynamo gets taste of LA

Posted: Updated:

After just a year of Latin dance lessons, and Dora Dolphin is proving she can keep up with the pros.

"I just love to perform," says Dora.

Fox 9 first met Dora when she was 8 years old, and even at that early age, her trophies from national and local competitions were piling up. Now at age 10, her resume is growing faster than she is. Dora has performed at Cowles Theater and will be performing at the Guthrie in this year's version of a Christmas Carol.

Dora has a long list of awards for her ballet, jazz, tap and lyrical dances. After winning a category of this year's Twin Cities Open Ballroom Championships, Hollywood came calling.

"Well actually, Jonathon Roberts from 'Dancing with the Stars', he's a choreographer," Dora clarified. "He invited me to come do my solos, and we decided to compete!"

Last weekend, Dora and her family flew out to Los Angeles, where she was the only kid to perform for a crowd of dance world dignitaries. Watching her in the front row were Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe, from Fox's 'So You Think You Can Dance.'

"I was a little bit nervous but I was mostly excited," said Dora.

"He was so nice and very encouraging to her and told her what a great dancer she is," says Dora's dad, Greg Dolphin. "He said if I don't see you before I'll see you in 8 years on So You Think You Can Dance. "

Dora is so dedicated, she's turned down multiple offers to be on the reality show 'Dance Moms.' Instead, she opted to attend school online this year to help free up her dance schedule.

"If she didn't love it, neither one of us are the parents saying, 'You have to do this,'" Greg Dolphin said. "We said, 'If anything, we need to take some stuff away.,' -- and she says, 'No, dad! I don't want to take anything away!'"
