Latino student conference expected to draw 1,300

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - More than 1,300 students are expected to assemble at Emory University this week for a conference focused on college and career preparedness among Latino youth.

Latin American Association spokeswoman Aixa Pascual says participants in the 14th Annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference on Nov. 9 will be offered workshops and motivational sessions aimed at helping them reach their full potential as students.

The organization runs year-round programs for 130 students at Sequoyah Middle School and Cross Key High School in DeKalb County that feature tutoring, mentoring and cultural enrichment.

Officials say the group is looking to decrease the Latino student dropout rate and close the achievement gap.
