Dallas Fire-Rescue took nearly 20 ambulances in for service after Ford issued a recall.
Ford said a faulty sensor has caused some F-series engines across the country to suddenly stop and not restart for at least an hour.
"Which in our business, especially with ambulances, that's life and death," said Joel Lavender with Dallas Fire-Rescue.
There have been no reported problems with Ford ambulances in Dallas, but the fire department said it didn't want to take any risks.
Other area departments said they are also checking their fleet for any engines affected by the recall.
