Family of Renisha McBride to Make Statement, Meet With Community Supporters After Funeral

11/7/13—The family of Renisha McBride, who during the past seven days has been trying to come to terms with the horrific shooting of this 19-year-old young woman while she sought help in a Dearborn Heights neighborhood, has asked that all interviews and contact with the family be conducted after her funeral.

Ms. McBride was shot and killed Sunday evening between 2 and 4 a.m. as she knocked on the doors of Dearborn Heights residents following a disorienting probable accident. When she reached the home of the alleged assailant, he reportedly shot Ms. McBride, and her body landed on the front porch of his home.

Ms. McBride was a Ford Motor Company employee with strong family ties in Detroit.

The alleged assailant did not, according to reports, immediately notify the police that the shooting had taken place. It was reported that instead neighbors contacted police about the shooting. He has not, to date, been arrested.

The family has spoken to the Dearborn Heights Chief of Police and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy regarding the issuance of charges in this case. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office indicated that they are investigating the case and will release a statement once it is completed. They added that the investigation is moving swiftly.

The family has called for "peace and justice as we challenge the system to arrest and try the alleged assailant for this horrific act." They will meet with those groups who wish to participate in further actions within the next two days following tomorrow's funeral, which will be held:
