Who will be de Blasio's police commissioner?

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has publicly stated he is definitely considering two men for police commissioner to replace Raymond Kelly.

One of them is Bill Bratton, who was police commissioner from 1994 to 1996 and the architect of the initial big drop in crime in New York City. He has since headed the Los Angeles Police Department. He worked with a monitor there, overseeing his department, just as he might have to here in January under new laws.

The second definite possibility is Chief of Department Philip Banks III, currently number three in the NYPD. He is the son a police officer and respected in the department.

Michael Palladino, the president of the union that represents detectives confirmed these two names. He said that whoever becomes the new commissioner will face a tough job as the department faces many challenges. Palladino added that 5,000 of the city's police officers will be eligible for retirement in January and that all officers haven't had a new contract for several years.

Those who have worked with de Blasio before said he will definitely choose a police commissioner who agrees with the mayor-elect's stop-and-frisk policy, probably someone along the line of his affirmative action beliefs and someone he personally gets along with.
