'Buy local' campaign hopes to change holiday shopping habits

The city and a local business organization are joining forces to encourage Chicagoans to buy local this holiday season.

They say that changing people's shopping habits even just a little bit, could do a lot for small business.

This is all part of a push to get people to "eat, drink and buy local 365." It's not an anti-chain store campaign, but it's designed to raise awareness about the important economic role all those mom and pop retailers and restaurants make in Chicago.

Anthony Irle doesn't need anyone to push him to shop local. He thinks it just makes good sense.

"When I looked for a suit rental, this came up to be the closest one," Irle said.

And it fit his needs.

"Basically, looking for affordable, close to my house, place that I can rent a suit for my friend's wedding coming up Sunday," Irle said.

Monitor Formal Wear, in Uptown, has been in business since 1976.

"A lot of the people's that come in, I know they're five miles radius from us," said Faye Rayan, manager of Monitor Formal Wear.

Rayan has been manager for the past 15 years and welcomes the effort to encourage people to shift some of their spending to local businesses.

At a news conference promoting the campaign, City Treasurer Stephanie Neely talked about the potential impact.

"If we could encourage Chicagoans to shift just one dollar a day, that's $365 a year, to local stores instead of chain operations, it would inject nearly $100 million into our local economy," Neely said.

A study in Andersonville in 2004 found that for every $100 spent at a local store, $68 stayed in the economy, compared to just $43 when it was spent at a chain.

Irle said he considered going to a national chain for his tux, but this one was more suitable.

"If you look at me, I'm not really the best size, I'm short and chubby, if I go somewhere else it takes them about 2-3 days before they have my size. She took care of me like now, she promised it tomorrow, she's gonna have my suit ready," Irle said.

Rayan says the difference is often the service.

"Good customer service, if you have time to your customer and give him the time that he needs, that is very important," Rayan said.
