A trail off Solar Drive, near Mulholland Drive, in Runyon Canyon could soon be off limits to hikers. The trek offers sweeping views of downtown, the observatory and the Hollywood sign and has been accessed by hikers for more than three decades.
"This is one of the best ones they have you can have your dogs off the leash and it's a pretty good hike and a good run down," said Fred Jackson, who hikes there every week.
Now the hills aren't the only obstacle for hikers. It appears a hedge fund bought this mansion and the land surrounding it, where the trail is. The new owners built a gate that blocks the trail. For the moment the gate remains open and hikers are being warned that soon they will have to take a different route.
Instead of taking one for the most beautiful and popular trails in Runyon Canyon, hikers may soon be forced to take these steep steps instead.
"There [are] hand rails, but I feel like there needs to be a little more support under the stairs because it's shaky," said Ryan Mendoza, another hiker.
"It kind of sucks, but if they own it, it's their land. They can do what they please but it kind of sucks that it's going to cut your workout down in half. Especially a work out that's been here for years and years," said Fred.
Councilman Tom LaBonge says the city is trying to buy the land, so the trail can stay open to everyone.
"For us to do it, it's your money and the people's money, we have to get an appraisal. And the appraisal has to say what it's worth and that is in the process right now," said LaBonge.
FOX 11 tried to reach out to the new owners but we didn't hear back. Though councilman LaBonge is optimistic, at this point there's no guarantee the property owners are willing to sell.
