Veterans day is Monday and Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. On Saturday, one organization combined the two to give vets a happy holiday.
"This is really cool that they do this for the veterans."
Chelsea Marshall and her family are just one of the 500 families that received one of these food boxes with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving.
"My husband and I are both in the military and I got a call from my unit yesterday saying they had this going on," she said.
This is the 5th year that St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance and Arizona Heroes to Hometowns has provided Turkeys for Troops. Those receiving the turkeys were from every branch of the military. The boxes are going to wounded vets or to families who have loved ones who are deployed.
"It's touching to be able to now serve them in some way. A lot of them wouldn't even have a Thanksgiving diner and sometimes I don't think we realize that as they return from deployments or injuries that this means the world to them because otherwise they wouldn't have a Thanksgiving dinner," said Kathy Pearce of Arizona Heroes to Hometowns.
The generosity of the community -- and the organizations -- noted by the deserving recipients.
Those receiving a food box on Saturday got a gift card to redeem a turkey a bit closer to Thanksgiving.
The program will be providing troops with turkeys in Glendale in the next few weeks.
