Detroit Historical Museum opens its doors to veterans Monday

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

There are many ceremonies and parades going on outside this Veterans Day, but there are also some neat things to take in indoor and not have to deal with the elements. The Detroit Historical Society is hoping to see some big crowds today and it's completely free.

A special thank you to those in the military came in the form of a special opening. The Detroit Historical Society is usually closed on Mondays but opened its doors for the Veterans Day Holiday.

Among the three floors of exhibits, visitors can check out the "Arsenal of Democracy." It basically shows Detroit's role in helping the allies win World War II.

"The Arsenal of Democracy really tells how Detroit went from manufacturing cars to making war materials," said Bob Bury, CEO of the Detroit Historical Society. "You'll see tanks, planes and helmets and most importantly you'll hear personal stories."

And after all that exploring, you'll likely work up an appetite. The museum is also offering free Faygo pop and Better Made chips for veterans and their families.

"It's the least we can do," said Bury.

The museum is located on Kirby Street and Woodward Avenue. It's open until 5 p.m. on Monday. If you can't make it out today normal business hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is always free.
