Working Professional Seeks Dating Coach To Help Build Confidence

Posted: Updated:

There are 102 million single adults in the US. Out of that figure, 47% are men. Some men want to be that way, but a growing number don't. FOX 29'S Mike Jerrick gives you a look into the booming business of helping men make a love connection.

Who can forget the movie Hitch? Thanks to the help of a "date doctor," played by Will Smith, hopeless romantic, Albert, played by Kevin James, ends up making all the right moves to win one woman's heart!

If only it were that easy in real life. It sure isn't for Jerry Liu of University City.

On paper, Jerry has it all together!

He's a recent college grad, has a great job working as a Web Producer and yet he insists that something's missing.

"I'm trying to improve my dating life," he says.

And find a "love" that he can call his very own. At 23, Jerry believes having this "partner" will make him a little more complete.

"If you want to label me, I'm definitely a late bloomer," he admits, and a shy one too.

While Jerry has made strides in the classroom, earning a degree in Philosophy, Economics and Politics from the University of Pennsylvania, he says that he hasn't been as lucky when it comes to relating to members of the opposite sex. For most of college, he nervously interacted with women and didn't have the nerve to go on dates.

"One day, there was a girl in class and I thought she was cute and I didn't know what to do."

So Jerry enlisted the help of dating coach, Kevin Cook, who takes pride in helping men go from frustrated to confident, especially when it comes to the dating game.

"I teach them how to meet women, to attract women, how to build a connection with women so that they can have the kind of relationship that they want," he proclaims.

What makes Kevin the expert? Well, once upon a time, he says he was like Jerry.

"I'm talking 15 years ago, I was frustrated with my dating life. I struggled to talk to women," he admits. "It was so bad; I actually went two years without kissing a girl.

Rather than give up, Kevin started studying the work of Erik Von Markovik, also known as "Mystery," the star of VH-1 reality show, "The Pickup Artist."

It wasn't long after that he began teaching dating workshops alongside him. Kevin was even mentioned in the New York Times bestseller, The Game, he was known as Garvelous.

However, while learning tricks of the 'pick-up' trade, Kevin knew that there was more to a successful relationship, so distanced himself from the movement and started his own company, "root of attraction." He says his coaching not only helps men find soul mates, but also helps them understand themselves better and build life skills that are applicable to aspects of life beyond dating.

"When I first met Jerry, he was a dorky-looking guy who was nervous talking to women and honestly, he'd get kind of hyperactive," Kevin recalls. These are all qualities that Kevin says will turn a woman off in a heartbeat. He encouraged Jerry to "be comfortable with silence," "hold eye contact," tone the energy down, and he helped Jerry understand how women see him.

"One thing he said is, 'a woman looks at your physical. How you look.' And the second thing is, 'a woman looks at your know, what impression do you give off.' And the third thing is, 'a woman looks at your personality[.]' So I just tested this..." Jerry says.

Jerry then took to the streets, asking strangers, how they'd rate him on a scale of one to ten.

"The ones who gave me 10s, liked my personality. The ones who gave me fours, didn't like my look," Jerry recalls. So Jerry got a haircut, started eating healthier, and started taking Kevin's advice to heart.

During coaching, Kevin would push Jerry to go talk to women. Sometimes the responses were discouraging, but at Kevin's prompting, Jerry was persistent and kept moving on to the next one, searching for the one who'd like the complete package.

"I want to make it clear that I don't teach guys to be just like me. I am teaching men to really be themselves!" he emphasizes.

When they do, Kevin says, they can expect a whole world to open up for them.

For Jerry, that means being bold, not caring what people think and simply going after what and who he wants!

"...whether it's to make friends with them or date them, I just want to have one of the doors open," he concluded.
