Planned move frustrates residents around Turner Field

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Residents in the neighborhoods around Turner Field said they're angry at news that the Atlanta Braves plan to move to Cobb County.

Eugene James said that when he bought his home in the Summerhill community, the biggest attraction was being right next door to Turner Field. The stadium brought promises of growth and revitalization.

"There are an awful lot of people that live in this area that made a conscientiousness decision regarding staying here to improve it and make it better and try and ride it out until those improvements were made," James said.

But years later, on the streets surrounding the stadium, there are boarded-up storefronts, vacant lots, graffiti and silence.

With the Braves planned move to Cobb County, what little hope there was has faded quickly.

"It's disappointing to see the city hasn't done more things to make the community better and to make the Braves happy," James said.

Derek Bellerose, who moved into the community six months ago, said a big reason was that it was so close to the stadium. .

"We figured the area would transition into a bigger area, but obviously now that won't happen," Bellerose said.

Many residents in those neighborhoods said that even though many promises never came true, they always had hope. Now, they fear that the area will be forgotten.
