Franklin Davis found guilty of capital murder

DALLAS -

The man on trial for the murder of a Carrollton teenager has been found guilty of capital murder.

The punishment phase for Franklin Davis, who previously tried to justify the killing of 16-year-old Shania Gray as a last ditch effort to avoid the death penalty, is set to begin immediately.

Davis has already confessed to killing Gray last September. So during his capital murder trial, he has been trying to convince a jury that he did not sexually assault her. If his defense attorneys can do that, he could avoid a death sentence.

On the stand Monday, Davis testified about the last minutes before the teen's death. He said he convinced Shania to get in his car and then started to leave her at an Irving park, but then he turned around and shot her.

Prosecutors argued Davis was trying to keep Shania from testifying against him in a sexual assault case. Davis admitted he wanted to ruin Shania's life because she ruined his, but maintains he never raped her.

"Yes I shot her," he said.

"And the whole time you knew she was going to be a witness against you in the sexual assault case?" an attorney asked.

"She said she was going to tell the truth. I did not touch her," Davis said.

"Of course she did when you got the gun aimed at her. She told you that," the attorney said.

"I never pointed the gun at her until I actually pulled the trigger," Davis said.

Davis testified that he gave media interviews after his arrest because he wanted to get things off his chest. The FOX 4 jailhouse interview as entered into evidence.

"I felt like it was all a nightmare. I felt like I didn't do what I had just done. She started to cook. I started to wash dishes. When I stuck my hand in water I knew then it wasn't a dream. I actually done it," he said.
