Senior Marathon Runner On Good Day

Posted: Updated:

This weekend, runners from all over the world will be here for the Philadelphia Marathon, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Good Day brought on a guest who has literally ran her way around the world.

Carol Pechler is from California.

She travels the world these days and participates in various marathons. She's ran in races in Anchorage, Paris, Napa, Honolulu, Maui, Boston, Hong Kong, Beijing, etc. And believe it or not, she started running at the age of 58. Carol ran her very first marathon at 59.

She is now 73, and this weekend's marathon will be her 31st race. She has already gotten 58 medals from various races.

Carol tells Mike and Sheinelle about the turning point in her life when she decided to run.

"I stood up in the morning," she recalled. "And my one leg was shaking. I said, ‘well, this is the decline,' but then I did learn that one can build muscles."

She then joined the Leukemia Society's marathon training team.

"My grandmother died of Leukemia," she said. That's why she joined.

Carol tells Mike that her toughest marathon was the one on the Great Wall.

"The reason is, the steps are quite uneven and some are very narrow. One goes down sideways," she said.

To anyone who is thinking about picking up running, Carol has three pieces of advice:

  1. Run slowly enough that you can talk. This guarantees that the running is aerobic, instead of anaerobic.
  2. Add, at most, one more mile per week.
  3. Have someone meet you at the trail head.

Watch the segment above to hear more of the interview. Hear what Pechler says running feels like to her.
