Who will pay for the new Braves stadium in Cobb County?

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Now that Cobb County residents have had a day to get used to the idea of the Atlanta Braves moving to that area, some real questions have surfaced over how it will all be paid for.

The Braves announced plans on Monday to build a new $672 million facility near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Interstate 285 in Cobb County. The team would begin play in the new facility at the start of the 2017 season.

A new Insider Advantage-FOX 5 poll found that more than half of Cobb County residents said they are happy about the plans.  But those same residents said they don't want to spend tax dollars on the new stadium.

Cobb County Commissioner Bob Ott, who represents the area where the new stadium would be built, said that 99 percent of county taxpayers should not expect a tax increase.

"My belief is the people that are benefiting from the development should be the one footing the bill," Ott said. "The chairman knows that's my position and I think that is what he and the rest of the board are working towards."

The proposed site of the new stadium is in a currently undeveloped area near the Cobb Galleria and Cumberland Mall.  County officials said the new stadium will be part of a 60-acre mixed-use development with shops and restaurants and green space and possibly hotels.

Ott said the area could see 400,000 additional hotel nights in the area. That means an additional three or four hotels in the area beyond what is there now. Ott is asking the public to reserve judgment until the specifics on the deal is made public.

Specifics of the deal could come later this week.

County Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal on Nov. 26.
