FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A North Texas woman has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the 2009 fatal shooting of her estranged husband at their Arlington home.
Jurors in Fort Worth on Wednesday rejected an insanity defense and convicted 51-year-old Colette Reyes of murder. The Tarrant County jury later decided on the prison term.
Reyes had been ruled competent for trial over the killing of 45-year-old Arthur Reyes, who was seeking a divorce after more than 20 years of marriage. The victim was a computer science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Defense attorney Warren St. John says the woman since 1994 had diagnosed mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia.
