TOLLESON, Ariz. -

A Tolleson family is grateful for their guard dogs because they scared off an intruder that tried to get into their home.

Never underestimate the menacing growl of a dog, no matter how big or small.

One tall man realized, he didn't want to mess with two Chihuahuas and a shih tzu on the other side of the front door.

Don't be fooled by this Chihuahua's fuzzy face.  Call him an ankle biter, a kick me dog -- he might be low to the ground, but when it comes to guarding his turf, Bubba and his friends can be mean.

This guy found out the hard way.  Home surveillance cameras caught him wandering the neighborhood streets, then he decided to walk up to his home, but when he opened the front door..

"This is when the dogs spooked him, right here.. what the heck just happened?"

Cameras inside the home showed the dogs laying down, then suddenly getting up and barking when the man opened the unlocked front door.  The man then closed the door and walked away.

5-year-old Malibu, a shih tzu and Chihuahuas Buster and Bubba were rescues.

"Anybody they don't know, they will bark," said homeowner Tom Witherington.

Witherington was alone in the home, upstairs in his bedroom, when he heard the alert and his dogs barking.

"It was very scary," he said.

He looked out his window and yelled at the intruder.

"So I approached him and said, 'Why did you enter my house?' and that's when he told me he was looking for water."

The man left before the dogs had the opportunity to sink their teeth into his ankles.

"She's actually nipped at some feet before."

After the scare of the intruder wore off, Witherington says he and his wife then had a good laugh.

And Bubba and his friends got a good treat.

"When we saw the video, we thought it was funny that these three scared them away."

Witherington filed a report with the police.  So far, the case is still under investigation.
