Condom dispensers at family services auditorium surprise parents

Posted: Updated:

Families flock to the auditorium in the Meeker County Family Services building to attend everything from dance classes to school plays, but some parents worry their kids are getting a crash course in safe sex when they go to the bathroom.

It's not uncommon for condom dispensers to be found in bathrooms in bars or convenience stores, but many parents were quite surprised to find one at a choir concert earlier this week.

"I'm not normally surprised by anything that happens in Meeker County, but that surprised me," Lori Musolf admitted.

Musolf was watching her 12-year-old's performance when another girl came back from the bathroom and slipped something in her purse. That something was a condom she got from the women's bathroom -- and Musolf knew she had to investigate.

"I walked in and there were condoms outside of the packages all over the floor in the restroom," she said. "I said, 'Thank God my 6-year-old granddaughter didn't have to come in here."

Right next to the signs reminding people to wash their hands, condom dispensers can be found in both the men's and women's bathrooms on the first floor -- along with brown paper bags and fliers containing graphic illustrations on how to use them. Yet, at least one thing appeared to be overlooked.

"Anyone could compromise those condoms," Musolf warned. "Someone could take them out, put a few pin holes in them and put them back in.

A sign says the dispensers belong to Meeker County Public Health, but Jenny Hoffman believes the bathroom her 6-year-old uses during dance class isn't an appropriate place for them.

"Somebody could grab one. 'What is this?'" she said. "How would I explain that? I'd probably have to go to public health and say, 'Can you explain it to a 6-year-old?'"

Musolf also felt free condoms would best be kept under wraps -- especially around young children.

"I've got a 12-year-old daughter, and I certainly don't want her exposed to condoms at a place where she comes for a choir concert," she said.

The parents who spoke with Fox 9 News did not know how long the dispensers have been in the bathrooms, but one of the daughters said they've been there for several months. Meeker County Public Health did not return calls for comment.
