Lobbying for Ga. port deepening heats up

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The lobbying effort to secure money for deepening the Port of Savannah is heating up.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will travel to the Panama Canal on Monday with Vice President Joe Biden. A supporter of the harbor deepening, Reed is certain to discuss the issue with Biden. The mayor said Friday that deepening Savannah's port is good for the economy.

Meanwhile, Gov. Nathan Deal has also been calling for federal funding for the project.

Authorities are working to deepen the Panama Canal, allowing bigger ships to pass. Georgia officials want to deepen the Port of Savannah so those larger ships can load and unload their goods locally.

Congress has given preliminary approval to bills to expand Savannah's port. Federal officials have not yet approved funding.
