'Miracle Service' Held After Woman Shot On Couch Survives

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. -

The recovery of another shooting victim is being called a miracle in Delaware County.

Edith Hardy was shot while she was sitting on her couch inside her living room back in April.

The 83-year-old's suspected shooter has been caught, but Edith and her community say the most important thing is that she was well enough to make it to a service honoring her Saturday.

There was prayer and praise for the woman sidelined by Chester violence as she returned to the church where she was a mother to so many people, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen reported.

On a Saturday night that would find many people out on the town, a small, dedicated congregation at Refuge Apostolic Church in Chester paid tribute to one of their own.

Hardy at times flushed from the warm greetings in a service held in her honor.

"We call this the miracle service because it was a miracle that brought her back here," one singer said.

"I think it's wonderful, and I appreciate everybody," Hardy said, as she was reunited with a church family she served for decades.

A stray bullet nearly ended that service while she was watching TV on a violent April night.

"When the bullet came through the window, it hit me here, and I said 'Oh, I'm shot,'" Hardy said.

Amazingly, she was able to get out of her house and have someone call 9-1-1. Her church family immediately called for help from above.

"We were having faith in God," the pastor said. "The community was praying, the church was praying, our city officials were praying."

Hardy said, "Those prayers were answered 'cause I mean I was in a really bad shape right then."

She was battling her way back from colon cancer surgery when the shooting happened, and still presses on.

Now, this congregation prays for many more years of her service and fellowship.

"Mother Hardy is a pillar of the Refuge Apostolic Church. She has served under three generations," the pastor said.

And they say her journey is living testimony.

"It is God's work. It's God's work. I feel every bit of it," Hardy said.

Hardy says she's overwhelmed by all of the prayers here. She says it helps her as she recovers. She is still getting medical treatment for her injuries, but she can't wait to get strong enough to be back involved in the church that she loves, Kinchen reported.
