Benefit held for Minneapolis chef diagnosed with brain tumor

Posted: Updated:

Jeff Robinson, sous chef at Northbound Smokehouse in south Minneapolis, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke at work on Oct. 19 -- an incident that led to his diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme.

Robinson underwent emergency surgery at HCMC and was given a 5 percent chance of survival. The chef beat the odds, and was even speaking within several hours -- but he and his wife need help paying the medical bills.

On Monday, Nov. 18, 100 percent of the restaurant's proceeds were donated to Robinson and his wife to help cover the cost of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Kitchen hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Even though Mondays are usually the slowest day of the week in the food industry, there were lines out the door all day -- and all for a good cause.

The relatively fresh eatery has already made quite a name for itself by smoking all of its own meats and cheeses, and neighbors were eager to come together to help the brewpub employee fight his potentially deadly diagnosis.

Robinson has been unable to work because the cancer has made it difficult for him to walk and talk, but he did stop by to thank his supporters briefly during lunch before returning home to rest.

For the rest of the night, his coworkers served up some of the restaurant's trademark comfort food for him. Many had an appetite for helping, because they showed up in full force to take a bite out of his bills.

Another event will be held at a neighborhood body shop on Saturday. More information can be found below.
