2013-'14 Weather Authority Winter Outlook

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Well, it's that time of year when it's sunny and mild one day, cold and icy the next.

Whether you're ready for it or not, the winter season is right around the corner. While some welcome the inevitable winter chill, others do not.

Although winter does not officially begin until Dec. 21, our area will see Old Man Winter as early as this month.

FOX 29's Chief Meteorologist Scott Williams has been analyzing data to help you prepare, and here's his exclusive FOX 29 Weather Authority Winter Outlook.

There are several factors to consider this year.

Let's talk El Nino and La Nina patterns first. This year is expected to feature a neutral pattern, so neither will play a major factor in predicting winter weather this season.

The Jetstream placement will oscillate back and forth throughout the winter season. While Williams anticipates most of the arctic air will stay bottled up to our north until January, our area will see several short-lived cold spells in November and December.

So, let's talk temperatures. We will ease into the month of November with average highs in the mid-50s for the month.

In December, look for temperatures above the average of 44 degrees.

January temperatures will remain below the average of 39 degrees, while February will feature temperatures below the average of 42 degrees and then slightly above-average temperatures to close out the month.

Now that we've covered the temperatures, here is Williams' exclusive FOX 29 Weather Authority snowfall forecast.

November will feature no measurable snowfall.

December will feature a nuisance system with little to no accumulations, mainly flurries.

January will bring the first significant, measurable snowfall for the area with 4 to 6 inches.

February will feature one or two Nor'easter-type scenarios with 10 inches of snowfall total for the month.

Snowfall will continue into early March with a few nuisance systems delivering 2 to 4 inches of snowfall.

So, 16-20 inches of snowfall, slightly below the average of 21 inches but double last year's 8 inches of snow.
